Technical Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
Outside of harvest, my role involves using my knowledge of plant growth, development, and physiology to help growers and orchard managers solve problems. I read scientific reports and translate them into practical tools, tips, and tricks that growers can use to improve fruit quality and maximise returns. I’m also involved in various industry groups that work together to solve challenges and move the industry forward.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve held a number of technical roles in the industry over the years. I built up my knowledge and expertise and always aimed to be the best I could be, which helped me progress into this role.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Yes — I have a Master of Science (Hons) in Biological Sciences.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love seeing growers and their orchards thrive. The variety of work keeps things interesting — no two days are the same. I also enjoy collaborating with like-minded people to drive positive change in the industry. It’s rewarding to be part of a unique sector with a great product and great people.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
There aren’t many Technical Managers in the industry. Even though we work for competing companies, we regularly come together to support each other and align our focus. This helps us present a united voice when supporting growers.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Study plant science or horticultural science. Postgraduate study is helpful but not essential. Stay curious and open-minded about your career path — there are many ways to grow into a technical role.
