Safety & Wellbeing Advisor
What does a typical day in your role look like?
No two days are ever the same! During our main season, we have hundreds of people working across our packhouse and coolstores, so my role is all about helping to keep everyone safe, supported, and feeling good at work.
On any given day, you’ll find me out on the floor doing walk-arounds, chatting with staff and managers about safety and wellbeing, or attending toolbox talks to keep important topics top of mind. I also process reports of hazards, near misses, injuries, and incidents. If something does happen, I’m part of the team that investigates and helps implement stronger systems.
Another key part of my role is keeping our safety procedures up to date and easy to follow. I also carry out regular safety audits and look for ways to improve our systems, procedures, and templates.
As a creative person, I enjoy designing posters, safety campaigns, and digital slideshows to share safety and wellbeing messages in ways that connect with our people.
I’m also part of our Wellbeing Committee, where we run initiatives, share resources, and offer support for mental, physical, and social wellbeing. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something that helps people not just stay safe, but thrive at work.
What I love most is the variety and the people—I get to work with different teams, solve problems, and make a real difference to our workplace culture.
How did you get into this role?
I came from the not-for-profit sector after studying Community Health. As a people-person, moving into Health & Safety felt like a natural step, where I could focus on the wellbeing and safety of workers.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Working with a wide and diverse range of people and having interesting conversations every day!
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Even though I’m part of a larger Health & Safety team, my role is mostly autonomous. It’s a great mix of self-directed work and collaboration.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Getting into Health & Safety can feel challenging at first, but the best path is to build a strong foundation in admin or industry experience, paired with the right H&S qualifications. It’s a great career if you enjoy a balance of desk work—like reports and systems—and face-to-face interaction. You’ll spend just as much time building relationships and having meaningful conversations as you will behind a computer.
