What does a typical day in your role look like?
Although every day is different, a “typical” day might start with admin tasks like checking emails and having a team check-in. Then I’ll head to the lab to monitor any ongoing experiments. After that, I usually touch base with project teams or partners to discuss progress, head out into the field to collect samples, and return to the lab to process those samples.
How did you get into this role?
While at university, I worked as a Summer Student Intern at Plant & Food’s Palmerston North site. After finishing my studies, I moved home and applied for another internship at the Te Puke site. Instead, I was offered a casual contract, which eventually turned into a permanent role—and that’s how I got here.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Yes. I completed a Master’s in Biochemistry, which gave me the skills and knowledge needed for this role.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Definitely the variety. I could be in the office, out in the field, or in the lab on any given day. My workload also changes with the seasons, so there’s always something new and exciting happening.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
I work across both science and Māori engagement. This means I get to draw on my background in science and my upbringing in Te Ao Māori. It makes my work more meaningful and allows me to bring my full self to what I do, while also enriching the experience for those I work with.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Take on opportunities, even if they don’t perfectly match your expected path. There’s something to learn in every experience, and you never know what might spark a new passion or direction.
