Project Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
My days vary a lot, so there’s no real “typical” day. I spend a lot of time on site catching up with contracting companies and SCH staff to plan and organise orchard construction. This includes things like roads, loadout pads, toilets, frost fans, hail covers, and the orchard structure itself. I try to get back to the office to stay on top of ordering materials, organising contractors, and handling admin—but time on site often takes up most of my day.
How did you get into this role?
I’m originally from Australia and have a background in building, so I had plenty of experience working with different trades and contractors. When I moved to New Zealand, the domestic building industry wasn’t looking great, so I decided to try something new. I came across this role and thought it was a perfect fit—and it has been!
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
No formal study was required. I didn’t have experience in kiwifruit, but I brought a strong background in project management.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Being outdoors in the fresh air and the fact that no two days are ever the same.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Every day brings new challenges, and often I don’t have the answers right away. I work closely with my team to figure things out together. It’s fast-paced and the workload can be heavy, but it’s incredibly rewarding to step back and see what we’ve built.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
You’ll need strong people skills, good time management, and the ability to prioritise tasks. Any experience in project management will definitely help.
