Plant Propagation Assistant
What does a typical day in your role look like?
My role is a mix of practical work, team coordination, and technical tasks. I take care of the plants, run the irrigation system, do spraying, check for diseases, operate machinery, and organise daily tasks for the team.
How did you get into this role?
Step by step. I started with seasonal nursery work and gradually took on more responsibilities in management. I earned certificates through work. Before this, I was a chef for almost 20 years in the Czech Republic, then moved to New Zealand and transitioned into horticulture.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
No formal study, but I completed certificates through work.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Seeing the results of our efforts—watching plants grow from seedlings to mature crops. I enjoy learning something new every day and keeping our customers happy.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Driving machinery is super fun!
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
As someone who came from a completely different career, I’d say keep an open mind. If you enjoy working outdoors and with nature, this could be a great fit. It’s a quiet job, and if you take every opportunity, you can work your way up.
