Packhouse Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
My day revolves around ensuring we’re packing kiwifruit to a high standard that meets Zespri’s grade requirements, while also maximising production in a safe and efficient way. I oversee the operation of the sizer machine, manage packaging, organise the shift, and liaise with staff, contractors, growers, CRMs, QCs, and handle employment-related matters.
I’m also responsible for engaging contractors when repairs or maintenance are needed, and I keep a close eye on orders to plan the required workload.
How did you get into this role?
I started as a machine operator 11 years ago with no prior kiwifruit experience. I spent time learning the basics in each department during packing and repacking. I was then offered a post-harvest cadetship, where Seeka supported me to complete Level 3 Horticulture at BOP Polytechnic and a Level 4 Certificate in Post-Harvest Horticulture through Primary ITO. I gained valuable on-the-job experience, especially in staff management, and progressed through roles as Line Manager, Assistant Manager, and eventually Packhouse Manager.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I believe it’s possible to work your way up without formal study, but I completed certificate papers at Toi Ohomai and Primary ITO, which definitely helped.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I’m really interested in new machinery and technology. I also value the work-life balance outside of the main harvest season and enjoy working with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
At Seeka, we’re lucky to be able to accrue extra leave during the busy packing season, which we can then take over the Christmas and summer break—that’s a pretty awesome perk!
