Orchard Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I oversee the orchard’s operations and guide the team through each stage of the growing cycle. A big part of my role is building strong relationships and coordinating with staff, contractors, and industry partners to achieve the best outcomes for the crop.
How did you get into this role?
I started by learning the practical side of orchard work—understanding vine management, seasonal tasks, and the challenges of growing kiwifruit. Over time, I took on more responsibility, which helped me develop leadership and people management skills. My interest in the industry and working with people eventually led me into a management role.
Did you need to study for this role? If so, what did you study?
Formal study isn’t required, but I’d recommend it to help build a strong understanding of the job.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy growing people as much as growing crops. It’s rewarding to see team members develop their skills and confidence while guiding the orchard to produce strong crops. Helping people succeed and achieving great results in the orchard—that’s the best part of the job.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
No two days are the same. One moment you’re checking fruit dry matter, the next you’re rescuing a stuck tractor or teaching a new picker the ropes. Our team is made up of people from all over the world, so lunch breaks often feel like a cultural exchange.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Be ready to get your hands dirty and think on your feet—no two seasons are the same. You need to enjoy problem-solving and working with people just as much as working with plants.
