Operations Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I start by checking in with the orchard manager and contracting team to plan what tasks need to be completed. I piece together the day’s work around other orchard activities already underway. I also order stock, liaise with suppliers, and spend time on business planning — especially around expansion and future development.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve had over 10 years of experience in the industry, and more recently transitioned into this role after working closely with this part of the business for several years.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I completed a Bachelor of Commerce extramurally while working in the industry. My goal was to combine business knowledge with hands-on experience to help me succeed in management roles within horticulture.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the flexibility and scope of my role. Tasks change with the seasons, so there’s always something new to focus on — you don’t have time to get bored!
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Our team comes from completely different backgrounds, but we’re united by a shared passion for kiwifruit and a genuine desire to do the best we can for growers.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Take every opportunity that comes your way, and don’t be afraid to explore different areas of the industry. You’ll find that experience in one role often deepens your understanding of another. Be open to learning and discovering what you enjoy most.
Anything else that you would like to add?
I grew up on a farm, so I always knew I wanted to stay in the primary industries. What’s special about kiwifruit is that we’re surrounded by people and organisations focused on the future — and that gives me confidence I’ve chosen the right industry and career path.
