Laboratory Manager
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I manage the labs at Apata, where we collect data for maturity monitoring, crop estimates, and pest monitoring. This helps growers produce bigger and better-quality fruit. Most of my day involves analysing data, supporting growers with technical advice, planning with my team, and attending meetings.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve always loved science and data and wanted a job where I could make a positive impact. After studying, I discovered I could do this in horticulture. I started as an assistant consultant, learning on the job, and then moved to Apata to grow my technical skills.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Not necessarily—it’s mostly industry experience, but a diploma or degree helps. I have a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from Auckland University.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love helping growers make data-backed decisions that lead to better fruit. It’s rewarding to see the positive impact of our work reflected in the season’s results.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
My role bridges pre-harvest and post-harvest, so I get to see the full journey of the fruit—from budbreak to harvest, packing, and load-out. It’s exciting to be involved in every stage.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Just give it a go and ask lots of questions. Use every opportunity to build a network of support—those connections can help you get wherever you want to go.
