Schools & training / Careers / Junior Software Developer

Junior Software Developer

What does a typical day in your role look like?

My role is a mix of creativity, problem-solving, and connecting with people. I design custom assessments for our Level 2 Hei Whanake classes, making sure they meet learning outcomes while staying engaging and relevant for our students. I also create interactive and accessible Moodle learning resources to support student success.

Outside the classroom, I update our social media with stories and highlights from our horticulture classes — it’s a great way to celebrate student achievements and keep whānau and the wider community informed. I’m also the go-to person for IT support in the office, helping resolve tech issues so the team can focus on their mahi.

No two days are the same, but they usually involve a good balance of planning, creating, supporting, and communicating — all with the goal of helping our students thrive and keeping our programmes running smoothly.

How did you get into this role?

I joined Toi Ki Tua as a summer intern, and during that time I was interviewed by Fruition to work on coding assessments for the Hei Whanake programme. While I was still interning, a permanent position became available, so I applied and was successful in securing the role.

Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?

I studied a Bachelor in Applied Technology.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I love being able to support rangatahi who need a hand up. It’s a privilege to be part of the amazing kaupapa that Fruition delivers, and I get to do work I truly enjoy every day.

What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?

My role is highly creative and collaborative. I get to blend technology, education, and kaupapa Māori values, which means no two days are alike. Our team has a great sense of humour, so even when things get challenging, we keep the wairua high and support each other.

What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t know everything at the start — so much of this role is about learning as you go. Be open to new challenges, ask questions, and try things outside your comfort zone. A passion for helping people and a willingness to problem-solve will take you a long way.
