What does a typical day in your role look like?

Every day is different. I manage meetings, prepare for them, and travel to visit customers. I oversee my team, research markets, set pricing, and monitor competitors. I also track Zespri shipping to ensure everything runs smoothly, assess fruit quality, and handle paperwork. Time management, prioritising, delegating, and forward planning are key parts of my day.

How did you get into this role?

I had a clear vision — I wanted to become Head of Sales. I worked hard, starting in entry-level roles and gradually moving up to senior positions. I communicated my goals with my manager, found a great mentor, and developed a clear career plan. Along the way, I gained broad experience across different areas.

Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?

Not necessarily. I studied Polymer Science but realised I preferred working with people rather than being in a lab.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy the variety and structure. One of the best parts is travelling to visit customers around the world — the US, Europe, Singapore, and New Zealand. I get to connect with people globally, which makes the role interesting and unique.

What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?

Zespri is a unique company. Each market is different and highly competitive. China, in particular, is a huge market with increasing quality demands. My role involves working with global teams to strategise and outperform competitors. It’s a critical role, especially in understanding and navigating the complexities of the Chinese market.

What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?

Get stuck in and gain experience. Learn how to lead people and communicate effectively. Be kind, be likeable, and show that you’re a hard worker who can deliver results.
