General Counsel
What does a typical day in your role look like?
My day involves negotiating property agreements for the sale and purchase of kiwifruit orchards and greenfield developments, completing bespoke kiwifruit development subdivisions, and managing legal structures within the industry. I also support succession planning and wealth transfer to the next generation, mentor younger staff to help them grow professionally and personally, manage the business, and meet with clients and rural advisors.
How did you get into this role?
I knew I wanted to be a lawyer from the age of 11. I chose school subjects aligned with law and focused on commercial law at university. After working in a large general practice law firm, I decided to specialise in the rural sector—particularly kiwifruit—because I didn’t want to be a jack of all trades and master of none.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Law Degree at Waikato University.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Providing innovative solutions to clients and doing industry-leading work. I enjoy adding value to the kiwifruit industry beyond just being a lawyer, building strong relationships with stakeholders, making a positive impact, and supporting my team to be the best they can be.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
We’re the only specialist rural law firm in New Zealand, and we’ve won Best Regional Law Firm at the NZ Law Awards six times. It’s rewarding to be part of a team that’s recognised for its success.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Do what you’re passionate about and what you’re good at. Commit to the industry you work in—being an excellent lawyer is important, but understanding the industry you serve is what sets you apart.
Anything else that you would like to add?
While I’m a lawyer and completed a law degree, there are also great opportunities for non-lawyers in the legal industry—such as legal executives—who can add significant value to the sector.
