Food Safety & Compliance Advisor
What does a typical day in your role look like?
No two days are exactly the same. My day usually starts—and continues—with reading and replying to emails. Most days involve a mix of compliance monitoring, planning and support. I might be reviewing documentation and manuals, collaborating on projects, attending meetings, or preparing for external audits.
How did you get into this role?
I started as a Quality Controller 13 years ago and discovered an interest in compliance systems. I worked as an internal auditor for 6–7 years before moving into my current role.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I completed Level 4 Horticulture (Postharvest), along with short courses such as Advanced Auditing, HACCP, and various symposiums.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love how different each day can be. There are so many areas and standards of compliance in our company, and they’re always evolving. I’m constantly learning and growing. Plus, I work with a great team!
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
One fun and unique part of our work is travel. We have packhouse sites from Kerikeri to Gisborne, a few in Melbourne, Australia, and a sales and distribution site in Auckland. Something surprising is that most of us are still learning something new every day!
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Be open to learning—especially on the job. Treat every audit as a learning opportunity. Take time to understand the standards you’ll be working with, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
