Field Technician
What does a typical day in your role look like?
During the kiwifruit season, my day starts bright and early — I aim to be on the first orchard by sunrise. My team and I collect kiwifruit samples from various orchards throughout the day. It’s my responsibility to ensure the team is meeting quality standards and working safely and efficiently. After the sampling is complete, I return to the office to review how the team performed and provide feedback.
How did you get into this role?
After completing a biology degree, I realised that working in a lab wasn’t for me. I grew up on an orchard and always enjoyed being outdoors. I also had some people management experience from previous roles, which made me a good fit for this position.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I studied a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Biology and Environmental Science. While this degree isn’t essential for the role, it helped me gain experience in other horticultural industries.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love working outside in beautiful locations and meeting different people each day. The role is well-balanced — I get to be hands-on in the field while also spending time in the office.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
The diversity of people I work with is amazing — from semi-retired individuals to students fresh out of university. I really enjoy learning from people I wouldn’t normally cross paths with in everyday life.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
A big part of my role involves people management, which is a skill you can develop in many settings. Get involved in leadership roles at school or university. A science degree is helpful to get your foot in the door, but experience is key — take up internships or practical opportunities whenever you can.
