Drone Operator
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I map kiwifruit orchards using drones, then process the data to create detailed row and bay maps that help with staff management. I also use commercial spray drones for tasks like cleaning cool stores and packhouses.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve always seen drones as tools for solving real-world problems. While working in orchard management, I was responsible for supervising over 60 RSE workers. It was challenging to track their progress, assess pruning quality, and manage timesheets. That’s when I started exploring how drones could help generate maps and spreadsheets to improve accuracy and efficiency—and that’s how I found my way into this role.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Yes. I completed commercial drone certifications, which allow me to operate drones over 25kg, dispense chemicals from the air, and fly in restricted areas where everyday drone use isn’t permitted.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy working with new technology and using it to solve real problems. Drone tech and automation are the future—and I believe they’ll eventually play a major role in all aspects of orchard operations.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
I get to fly drones that can weigh up to 150kg when fully loaded—that’s pretty exciting!
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
If you’re passionate about technology and drones, reach out to someone experienced in the field and ask to have a chat. Networking is key—it can open doors and help guide your next steps.
