Director
What does a typical day in your role look like?
This role takes up about 30% of my time and is focused around Board meetings, official events, and travel. There’s a lot of reading, keeping up with industry issues, discussions with growers, and meetings. At Board meetings, it’s important to be a clear thinker, listener, and communicator.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve been in the industry for over 25 years, and this role is the culmination of that experience. Having worked in growing, post-harvest, and with Zespri has been invaluable. My seven years with NZKGI on the Forum and Executive gave me a deep understanding of grower matters and how to consider multiple perspectives.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I have a B.Com (Accountancy), an MBA (with Distinction), and a B.Arts in Computer Science and Economics. I’m also a Chartered Accountant. Having a professional background with a commercial focus has definitely helped.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
It’s an absolute privilege to contribute to the long-term future of Zespri and the kiwifruit industry through a grower lens.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Get involved. A directorship in the kiwifruit industry is a “give back” role, so look for ways you can contribute. NZKGI and grower entities are great places to start. Focus on what you can give, rather than what you can gain.
