Digital Content Specialist
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I spend my day connecting with other departments to stay aligned with their goals and the company’s overall direction. I proofread and produce weekly communications and marketing materials to support their work. I also plan, create and curate content for social media and our website, help organise and run marketing campaigns, script videos, and work with videographers on production and editing. I regularly review data from social media, email and our website to gain insights and improve our strategies.
How did you get into this role?
I was looking to move away from structural engineering and worked with a career counsellor to figure out what I value in a job, what motivates me, and where my strengths lie. We used those insights to generate a list of careers that matched my personality and goals. Marketing stood out, and after researching it further, I realised it was something I’d really enjoy—so I jumped in!
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Most employers prefer you to have a marketing degree, but I already had an engineering degree and a few years of work experience. That helped show I had skills like creativity, strategic thinking, data analysis and writing. To make the switch to digital marketing, I completed certifications through Google, LinkedIn and Udemy to prove my knowledge and ability in the field.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love being creative, seeing my ideas come to life, and making a positive impact on the teams I work with.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Every two weeks, our Technical Team shares a ‘TechTip’ with our kiwifruit and avocado growers, offering scientific insights and best practice advice. I proofread these, and surprisingly, I really enjoy learning about the science behind growing and how it translates into better practices.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Digital marketing roles require knowledge of search engines, websites and social media platforms. Luckily, many of these platforms offer free or low-cost training and certifications. Take advantage of those—learn the tools, earn the certifications, and you’ll gain practical skills while showing employers you’re ready to deliver.
Anything else that you would like to add?
Before choosing a career path, take time to explore what suits your values and goals. If you’re unsure, consider working with a career counsellor. It doesn’t take long, and the insights can be incredibly valuable.
