CEO
What does a typical day in your role look like?
There’s no such thing as a typical day—there’s a huge amount of variety. I spend a lot of time with the senior executive team and board, setting and implementing the organisation’s strategy. My days are filled with talking, writing, and reading.
How did you get into this role?
I’ve held a number of senior and CEO roles before this one. I joined this organisation when it was first established—I was contacted by the recruitment agency for this opportunity.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
I have a PhD in Molecular Biology, which helped me understand the science. To be a CEO, you need a broad range of skills and knowledge.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the variety. It’s a really energetic industry, and I love working with smart people. It’s also rewarding to contribute to New Zealand Inc.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
The timeline is unique compared to the rest of my career—we’re developing varieties that take 20 years to come to fruition. It’s like planting trees whose shade we may never sit under.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Take every opportunity that comes your way, but don’t expect anything from them. Try to gain as broad a range of experience as possible.
