Business Support Assistant
What does a typical day in your role look like?
I manage and oversee a range of tasks related to communications, coordination, and secretarial support for Māori Kiwifruit Growers Inc (MKGI) and Māori Kiwifruit Growers Ltd (MKGL).
How did you get into this role?
I entered the industry through an internship with Toi Ki Tua in 2022. That experience helped me build key connections, which led to my current role.
Did you need to study for this role, if so, what did you study?
Not necessarily. My degree in Social Science, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Human Development, wasn’t directly related to the role, but it was relevant to the internship that helped me get started in the industry.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy working with a wide range of people, learning about the kiwifruit industry, and gaining a deeper understanding of Māori culture and how it shapes the businesses we work with.
What’s something unique, surprising, or fun about your role or team?
Being part of a smaller organisation has opened up many opportunities for growth. Through my role, I’ve had the chance to travel to places like Hawaii, China, Japan, and soon Dubai, as I manage the marketing side of the Collaborative Marketing programme for exporting fruit to overseas markets.
What advice would you give someone interested in your role or career path?
Be open and curious about learning. Understanding the people and the industry is key. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take a chance—fresh ideas are always welcome in this space.
